Go Greyhound and Leave Your Head With Us

Tim Mclean, having just wrapped up a seven week run working a carnival in Edmonton, called his girlfriend Alexandra Storey a little after midnight on July 30, 2008 that he was on his way home to Manitoba and then settled in for the 850 mile bus trip. He sent her dozens of texts as the Greyhound he was riding made its way east to Winnipeg from Edmonton that Wednesday. He sent her playful photos of his tattoos including his newest, a cursive script across his stomach saying “Wanna Play” , a reference to the game booths he ran at the fair. He told her that other passengers on the bus were taking ecstasy and he was counting down the hours by sending a new text at every town he passed.  It was from Brandon, Manitoba, some time before 8 p.m. that he sent the longest flurry of texts, she said. He planned to go see his father, collect his pet iguana from a friend and wanted to visit Ms. Storey later that night. In his last message, Mr. McLean said his phone was dying and he was going to charge it when he got to Portage la Prairie.

That final hour the bus departed from a stop in Erickson, Manitoba with a new passenger, a tall shaven headed man in his 40’s by the name of Vince Weiguang Li. Li got on the bus sporting sunglasses and took a seat at the front of the bus. He apparently went unnoticed by the 22 year old Mclean as he made no mention of him in his texts to Storey. Mclean wrapped up his conversation, put on his headphones and tried to get some sleep. Ten minutes later, as Zorro played on the overhead T.V.’s, Li moved from the front of the bus to the back and took the empty seat next to Mclean. Reportedly Mclean cracked his eyes and gave him him the barest of acknowledgements and returned to his nap.

Ten minutes later, 26 year old Garnet Caton sitting one row forward for the pair, was startled by a "a blood-curdling scream" . Caton turned to see the much larger Li pinning Mclean (who only stood 5 foot 5 and weighed in barley 125 pounds) between  the seat and the bathroom wall repeatedly stabbing him in the throat with a “Rambo knife”

“He must have stabbed him 50 or 60 times”

The bus had come to a screeching halt and passengers ran screaming, tripping over themselves in horror to exit the vehicle. The bus driver and another passenger tried to reach Mclean and rescue him from his attacker, but Li had decapitated the body and produced the head, holding it up like a gory trophy sending the remaining persons off the bus off in a wave, puking and crying.

Caton added: "I got sick after I saw the head thing. Some people were puking, some people were crying, some people were shocked. He just looked at us and dropped the head on the ground, totally calm."

Li tried to drive the bus away but the driver had the presence to trip the vehicle’s emergency immobilizer system, rendering the coach inoperable. He then barred the door with a crowbar and stood vigil with a passenger and a truck diver on the scene to prevent Li’s escape. The madman initially attacked the trio, slashing at them from behind the barred doors, but then calmly returned to dismembering the corpse, eating pieces of Mclean as he removed them.

By 9.pm. the RCMP of Portage la Prairie were in a standoff with Li and had summoned special negotiators and a heavily-armed tactical unit. Li taunted police, alternately pacing the length of the bus and cutting and defiling the corpse. Police officers then observed Li eating parts of the body. Li told the negotiators that he “needed to stay on the bus forever”.

“Forever” was apparently about four and a half hours later, because at 1:30 am Li broke the back window of the bus and attempted to escape. He was tasered twice, handcuffed and placed in the back of a police cruiser. Parts of the victim’s body, placed in plastic bags, were retrieved from the bus, while his ear, nose and tongue were found in Li’s pockets. The victim’s eyes and a part of his heart were never recovered and are presumed to have been eaten.

A week later Greyhound Canada quietly and unceremoniously pulled their current ad campaign "There’s a reason you’ve never heard of bus rage."

Pure insanity! Hey, what happened to to your music player? Quicktime takes me away from the text, so I can’t read and listen at the same time like I used to.
